Karaköy, İstanbul'un Beyoğlu ilçesine bağlı semt. Bankaları ve iş hanlarıyla ünlü en eski ticaret merkezlerinden biridir. Eski Antik Galata semtinin modern adıdır. Tarih boyunca bir liman ve ticaret merkezi olma özelliğiyle ön plana çıkmıştır. Boğaziçi'nin Avrupa tarafında Haliç'in ağzında yer alır. Karaköy, şehrin çok tarihsel bölgelerinden ve en eskilerinden biridir. 19. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde Osmanlı Devleti'nin finans merkezi haline gelmişti. Bugün ise, önemli bir ticaret ve ulaşım merkezidir.
Bölge Karaköy Meydanı'ndan kendisini çevreleyen semtlere bağlanır. Güneybatıda Galata Köprüsü Karaköy'ü Eminönü'ne bağlar. Tersane Caddesi batıda Azapkapı'ya, Voyvoda Caddesi kuzeybatıda Şişhane'ye, Yüksek Kaldırım Caddesi kuzeyde Beyoğlu'na, Kemeraltı ve Necatibey Caddesi kuzeydoğuda Tophane'ye açılır. Karaköy bölgesi 19. yüzyılda, bankaların ve sigorta şirketlerinin toplanma yeriydi. Ayrıca günümüzde mKaraköy, Bizans zamanından beri bir liman alanına sahipti. Haliç'in kuzey sahili yerleşim için ayrıydı. Yaklaşık Milattan Sonra 1000 civarında, Bizans İmparatoru Cenovalı tüccarlara bu bölgede yerleşme ve iş yapma iznini vermiş ve garantilemişti. Cenovalı'lar kendilerini ve ambarlarını korumak için dayanıklı istihkamlar yaptılar. Ceneviz duvar kalıntıları hâlâ görülebilir. Fakat Galata Kulesi onların içinde görülebilen duvarlardaki en yüksek ve en kuvvetli noktadır. 15. yüzyılda Galata bir İtalyan şehrine benziyordu.ekanik, elektrik, elektr1453'te İstanbul'un fethinden sonra, bölge üç yerleşim kategorisine sahipti; Ceneviz, Venedik ve Katalan tüccarları; Ceneviz ve Osmanlı vatandaşları ile Rum, Ermeni, Gürcü ve Yahudiler. Nüfus kompozisyonu kısa zaman içinde değişti. 1478 nüfus sayımı'na göre bölgenin hemen hemen yarısı Müslüman idi.onik ve su tesisatı ekipmanlarının kolaylıkla bulunabileceği yerlerden biridir.1500 yılından itibaren, daha çok İspanyol engizisyonundan kaçan Sefarad Yahudileri buraya yerleşti. Karaköy, 1854-1856 Kırım Savaşı için savaşmaya gelen Avrupalıların ikinci akınına maruz kaldı. Savaş için gelen Britanyalı, Fransız ve İtalyan birleşik güçlerinin akınıydı. Rıhtım eksikliği, ordunun ve askeri ekipmanlarının boşaltılmasını zorlaştırdı. Bir Fransız şirketi 1879'da Karaköy'e bir iskele yapmak istedi, ancak 1895 yılında bitirilecekti.
19. yüzyılın son on yılında Karaköy kendini bankacılık bölgesi olarak geliştirdi. Osmanlı Bankası buraya merkezini kurdu. İtalyan ve Avusturya sigorta şirketleri şube ofislerini açtılar.
20. yüzyılda ticaret aktivitelerinin artması ile liman gümrük binaları, yolcu terminali ve deniz antreposu ile genişledi. Karaköy ayrıca, iskele boyunca yer alan Yunan tavernaları ile meşhur hale geldi. Ekim Devrimi (1917) sonrası Rusya'dan kaçan binlerce Beyaz Rus bu alana geldi ve yerleşti.Also unhealthy for emergency
